sea water doesn't work well because it'll just run off and the fish won't get salty. if you soak the fish in sea water, you risk it becoming too salty

When I was reading "The Old Man and The Sea," I came upon the part where the old man wished he had some salt to go with the raw fish he was eating. I was wondering why he didn't just sprinkle a few drops from the ocean onto the fish.
