In the future, you should cover the bird's perches with sandpaper coated perch covers. This will wear the bird's nails down and make it less likely his nails will have to be clipped.
For the past 3 days, my parakeet Birdy has been acting distant towards me and even his mate. He would eat and drink but he wouldn't play with his toys or chirp to music anymore. I do take them out in my apartment everyday for exercise and everything was fine, but I noticed when I'd try to get near him he would whimper and behave as if he was scared of me. For a while now I've noticed that his nails were long and curved so I guessed that maybe they were too long and he was in pain. So I called the pet store I bought his mate at and they told me to bring him over. When they checked him they said that I should've brought him in for nail trimming a long time ago and that's why they're curved like curly fries lol. I was there when they trimmed his nails and he didn't put up much of a fight until we reached a certain nail that he would not really let the lady cut. She said he would be all right for now and to bring him back in 4-6 weeks so she could get that nail. When she put him back in the cage, he fell on his back and acted like he couldn't get him. The lady told me that he might be in shock from the nail trim but he would get over it. Now that he's home I noticed he's been slipping a lot and like he can't jump from post to post like he used to (when he's nails were long and curved I didn't notice he'd slip too... but now he slips off in every jump) I took him out to fly and he runs into things a lot and slips from his posts. Is this normal? Will he get better?
