How Do I Amputate My Chinese Water Dragons Tail?!!! NEED HELP ASAP!!?

Posted at: 2014-11-15
for 10 years I had a Chinese water dragon that had lost most of her tail before I got her. She was Blade the First Dragon, my namesake, so I hope I can help.

Chinese water dragons do no re-grow a broken tail the way most lizards do. I a piece breaks off, it will heal but it will not grow back.

Why are these lizards losing part of their tails? Is it possible that they are damaging their tail by hitting it against something? If so, you may need to get them a larger enclosure. If this is the problem, they do not need any treatment.

If the tip of the tail is shriveling up bit by bit, there could be an infection and/or dehydration. They may need medication.

Water dragons need a water dish big enough to immerse themselves, and the water must be changed often.

Your best recourse is to find a veterinarian who treats reptiles.

If this is not possible, you will want some bleach or fire to disinfect the very sharp knife. Chill the tail with ice or a cold pack, then cut quickly. The cold will lessen pain and bleeding. Cut quickly and well back from the diseased part.

I recommend you have some Goldenseal capsules, which you can get at a health food store or drug store. Open a couple of capsules and pour the powder onto a clean dish before you start. Then after you cut, stop the bleeding by applying the powder to it. Every day, rinse the tail and put more Goldenseal until it is closed.

If it were me, I would also give the patient Colloidal Silver by mouth. [also from health food store. This is a good antimicrobial agent which is not toxic and okay for reptiles.

Obviously disinfect the enclosure thoroughly, and keep it especially clean for now.

My advice is based on personal experience, and you may get better advice elsewhere.

Chinese water dragons do not hold grudges, and this procedure should not harm your relationship with your pet.

I will check this question later to see if you have any more questions.

Bring it to the vet.

I have 2 chinese water dragons. One male just over a year old and one younger dragon not a year old yet and sex is undetermined. The younger one has lost more than half of his tail! I have been reading online and i need to amputate it before it hits his body but i do not know hot to amputate. My older one seems to have the same problem but his tail is still pretty long which means its not as advanced. I would still like to fix his aswell. I NEED HELP ASAP!! CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE ITS TO LATE!!
