Lamarck assumed that changes in animals are caused by changing environment (if the fruit hangs higher than the animal can reach, it will automatically make that animal have offspring with a longer neck)

Darwin figured that mutations are random, and that animals who happen to have a longer neck simply had better chances of surviving and having offspring
