How do I gain a birds trust/become friends?

Well I have two parakeets and a conure, and how I earned their trust was by petting them. I would start by petting a small spot on their stomach so they could see that I was being gentle, then over time I would move to their back and wings. You can't pet their backs and wings right away because they can't really see you so they aren't sure if your going to hurt them or not, but with this technique of starting at the stomach where they can see, they eventually learn that you are just petting them and you mean no harm.

Birds tend to bond with one owner as their friend for most of their lives. It may be difficult but if you spend enough time you will have abit more of a chance. Don't be surprised if your still second best though

My aunt has two birds and one of them I absolutely LOVE! His name is Harry but he bites people he doesn't really know, basically everyone but my aunt. My aunt said she might give Harry to me when she dies (which I'm not wishing for to happen anytime soon) but I still wanna become his friend and earn his trust. I'm trying my aunt's technique:putting my hand up to the cage and raising it little by little everyday (which I don't really see the point in that) and if he tries biting me she told me to slowly pull my hand away instead of jerking it so I don't scare him. But I wanted to know if there were any other techniques.

She also told me I should speak to him and say his name often and try teaching him new things to say. I believe this is working because I noticed that when my aunt is holding and petting him he makes a some kind of sound and he's quietly starting to do that around me.

Her techniques are good but if anyone knows of any other techniques to help that would be great and I would really appreciate it ;)
