A picture is worth a thousand words of description. The site linked below has links and images of American species of box turtles to help you differentiate the species:

Could be Terrapene carolina major, the Gulf Coast box turtle. When you ask for an identification, you need to state the region where the organism was observed or collected.

My fiancée and I got a box turtle yesterday. He was crossing the road and almost go hit several times. This is a description of his characteristics , his shell is done shape and spiney, the shells color is tan, his head is a dark brown with white on his jaw and orange tracing the bottom opening of his mouth, he has orange spots on his front legs, his rear legs have no spots and the rest of his body (expect his head of course) is a greyish brown. Any idea of what species of box turtle he could be?
