I wish to order a cockatoo for my father who lives in maryland, any suggestions? preferablly one he can pickup?

I'd be leery about doing this unless he knows what you're doing, and he wants another bird. He's had 15 years without having a bird (unless he got one since then, and you're not telling us about it). Cockatoos can live 40-60 years, and some have lived 100 years. You have to think beyond your father's life span here, or you could have this bird in your life as well.

Think hard before you do this, and DON"T surprise your father with this unless you're absolutely sure he wants another one.

yes I totally believe that pet's should not be gift's unless the receiving end is aware and fully committed. I do appreciate that seeing how I would have said the same thing. I would like to try and find a lead before I get his hopes up though. I know he wants one he still has his old buddies cage set up where it always was. good looking out TK ;)

Not smart. Quite stupid, actually.

Between my wife and I we have 50+ years of bird experience. You need to let the pet choose you - not the other way around. My blue Quaker - tried to share his millet with me at the pet store. He and I have been buddies since. My wife's sun conure? It jumped away from everyone at the pet store, ran up to her and climbed into her shirt! We were not looking to buy a bird that day, just food - but we walked out with a bird.

If you choose a bird - good luck trying to finally get it to like you after many frustrating months. If you start off with an animal that chooses you - you start off with a great friend and relationship on day one.

I live in california and wish to purchase a cockatoo for my father who lives in maryland. I'd like a rescue bird because it's more humane I suppose but either way I'd be happy if I could just figure out how to go about getting one he could maybe pick up around the baltimore area. he had a cockatoo through out my childhood and the sucker passed away in '97. he loved that bird more than anything in the world and I think it would bring him great joy to have another. he doesn't have alot of money so I think it would be a good fathers day surprise if I went ahead and bought him a new best friend. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
