What bees that burrow in the ground?

They might be black bumble bees. Some bumble bees are black all over.

These bees are black, about 3/4' long and do not appear to have a stinger. At least the one I inspected did not appear to have a stinger. They have made several holes about 1/4" in diameter under one of my gardenia bushes. They dig the dirt up making a mound. They have fuzz on them around the torso. Their legs have what appears to be pollen on them.
