It effects the central nervous system and if nearly always fatal.There is no known cure, it destroys your brain. Pets are required to have regular vaccinations to prevent infecting their owners. Wild animals such as fox,raccoons,skunks are the most carriers including bats. It can be inhaled by droplets from roosting bats in caves. Some cave explorers have contracted the disease that way and some patients of organ transplants have contracted because the donor had the infection. The best advice is to avoid wild animals that seem too friendly or sick. Never pick up a bat. In the event you are bitten report it quickly and hope the animal can be located and tested for the disease.
