What should I do with this baby red cardinal?

Pics or it didn't happen. this story has holes in it. "It's a baby but old enough to live by itself" what...

During my walk, I saw a baby cardinal in a tree. It was chirping loudly but thought its mother would be nearby. Then, it flew out of the tree almost 20 feet and landed on my head. I was suprised, but put it back in the tree. I started walking home again, but still, it came and flew to me. It followed me all the way home until it came into my garage. I decided to put it in a decorative tree I had outside on my drive way. After half an hour, I went outside to see it sitting on a shoe cabinet.

The baby cardinal was a male, almost fully fledged with a white breast area and had a long tail. I thought The bird was old enough to live by itself, but it remained on the tree and didnt move. I researched a little and found that at that age, the cardinal should be afraid of humans, so maybe someone in my neighborhood must have taken care of it previously.

None claimed the bird. It simply won't leave my house and I have yet to see any sign of its mother. I am ready to take care of it, but don't know if thats the right thing to do. The rehab center just said to keep it back where I found it. I put it in my garage overnight and in the morning I went back to the place i found it. Luckily this time it didn't follow me and I was relieved. After an hour, I went back outside to find it sitting in my garage again! Now it knew where I lived! I have yet to make an attempt feeding it hoping it would fly away to find its mother or something, but it isn't leaving.

What should I do?!?
