Well in the first occasion the most possible answer is that the whale wont react (unless the whale is an orca whale).Of course in the second, even without the kicking part,you can be sure tha you'll become the meal of the shark.The most possible reaction in the case of the octopus is to throw some ink to distract your attention.A squid would possibly had the same reaction.

1. Probably die because the whale wouldn't notice them and a hit with a tail or a fin would kill you.
