Baby birds are VERY hard to care for, over the years I have tried to save quite a few, with only one success, and that was with a bird that was obviously healthy when I found it.
Give yourself a pat on the back for trying, many people would have just tossed the baby in the bushes and not cared at all. You did nothing wrong!
:-)
What exactly is baby bird food? Well one thing for sure, BABY BIRDS DON"T DRINK WATER! They will drown if you give them through their mouth. Only the adult birds drink water. Baby birds need heat and food, without the mother or anyone, they would die. Thanks for giving a thought on the bird and trying to help. Humanity needs these people. A predator might have picked it up and dropped it in midair which then crushed some bones or ribs making it hard too breath.(Thats why it spread out it's wings) Also possibly from heat loss. Sorry for the bird's loss, not your fault.
Probably dropped by a magpie after it plundered the nest.
Look around for a nest.
I found a baby blackbird out on my driveway this morning. He is so young he doesn't have his eyes open yet. I tried feeding him baby bird food I made and he nibbled on a little of it. Then I returned about half an hour later and he has both of his wings spread out and lying on his stomach. He is still alive but what is the matter with him? I can't take him to an animal shelter/rescue because the closest one is 2-3 hours away. Please, what do I do???
