It's called "Volunteer work" for a reason. Volunteers do not get paid. People who work there for work and not volunteering get paid though. =) Does that make sense? lol The actual workers get paid.
They pay their workers I believe.
But people can pay to volunteer there including the airfare costs, housing, and other fees.
I've looked into volunteering in Thailand and Costa Rica because of elephants and sea turtles.
Are workers payed? And what qualifications are needed for such a job?
