WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF AMITOSIS OVER MITOSIS?

Mitosis is slower, but more precise, with less margin for error. Mitosis occurs in several stages.

Interphase: The longest stage of mitosis and the stage in which the cell spends most of it's life. No cell division takes place here.

Prophase: Nuclear material condenses and chromosomes appear, visible as two chromatids.

Metaphase: The chromosomes line up along the midline of the cell in preparation for division. The centromeres separate and form an aster (made of microtubules).

Anaphase: The chromosomes are pulled to opposing ends, or poles, of the cell by the Aster (the microtubules attach to what is known as a centromere, the binding point of two chromatids).

Telophase: The final stage of mitosis. The two cell halves pinch off and a new, identical nuclei forms in each daughter cell.

In amitosis there are but two stages. The cell splits, and then reforms into two individual cells. This is only seen in specialized cell types which are not designed for extreme multiplicative endeavors. Also called direct cell division.

Hope this helps, and take care.
