Should i get canaries?

Posted at: 2014-11-15
i want to know everything about them :) i really want to get a pair but i need to know more about them.

i already own a budgie, and have expirience with 5 others i used to own.

first things first don't put the canaries in with the budgie.

Canaries are very cute and curious birds, they only breed with 12 hours of sunlight and usually only breed if a breeding box is available. It's not easy to tell the sex and the only way I know is to blow in between their legs, males have a...well penis and females don't is the easiest way to explain it. They go good with most other birds like finches, doves, quails etc. Some people think they don't get along with diamond doves but I've never had a problem.

They are also very delicate and get frightened easily, I had one die recently for no apparent reason so I assume that's what happened, something frightened her. They are lovely little birds to have around and males have been known to sing and he may or may not sing with a female in with him. I'd suggest don't get 2 males as you never know what might happen. Don't even try and tame them as they are way too flighty and I don't think you'd even get close to it.

There are many different breeds of canaries, I personally love German Rollers which are the green ones but many more exist, even ones with 'hair' called a crest.

Anyway good luck to you and I hope you love your new friends :)
